-hidden disasters waiting to happen--are buried around the world
in nearly 70 countries. And at the rate people are currently working
to find and remove these threats, the United Nations' Landmine
Database estimates the job will take another 1,100 years.

Terrorists find unlikely allies in neo_Nazis America's right_wing extremists have welcomed the
September 11 terrorist attack as a strike on their enemy, the United States Government.
While the vast majority of Americans have reacted with horror at what happened, a number of
underground groups have rushed to voice support for the terrorists. Others have called for militia
groups to exploit the chaos the terrorist actions caused to launch their own assault on the state.
Billy Roper, of the neo_Nazi National Alliance, posted a message on his Web site saying:
"The enemy of our enemy is, for now at least, our friend. "We may not want them marrying
our daughter, just as they would not want us marrying theirs ...
But anyone willing to drive a plane into a building to kill Jews is alright by me." "We may not
want them marrying our daughter, just as they would not want us marrying theirs. We may
not want them in our societies, just as they would not want us in theirs.
"But anyone willing to drive a plane into a building to kill Jews is alright by me. I wish
our members had half us much testicular fortitude."
Other postings include August Kreis, leader of a Nazi group called the Sheriff's Posse Comitatus,
based in Ulysses, Pennsylvania, praising the "Islamic freedom fighters" on his web site, and Tom
Metzger, of the White Aryan Resistance, who said of the September 11 attack: "If an Aryan
wants an example of 'Victory or Valhalla' look no further." The Southern Poverty Law Centre,
which for 30 years has monitored extremist groups in the United States, said these sentiments
were common among white supremist organizations. The center briefs the government on the
activity of "patriot" and neo_Nazi groups.
Mark Potok, the center's director of publications, said
that the extremists considered themselves at war with
the government, which they have named the Zionist
Occupation Government, or ZOG.
Regardless of their racial beliefs, many express solidarity with those who attack their enemy
as long as they do not want to settle in America.
McVeigh's anger at government actions against such groups _ particularly the FBI's siege of
Waco in 1995 which ended when followers of David Koresh set their compound on fire, killing
more than 80 people _ caused him to leave his bomb outside the Alfred P Murrah Building.
Mr Potok said: "It has been primarily the white supremacist, neo_Nazi groups, who are among the
most extreme of the extreme Right organizations, who have supported the September 11
attack. It illustrates the sea change that has occurred in their thinking over the last 25 years.
"Then they wrapped themselves in the flag
and proclaimed themselves100 per cent
American.
Now they are willing to join America's enemies if it will help
create the state they want to establish.
" Although the number of "patriot" groups has dwindled from 800
inthe mid 1990s to fewer than 200 many are believed to have
extensive arsenals of weapons.

In "Sudan's Eternal War" (March/April 2002) Randolph Martin presents the
most accurate assessment of Sudan that I have read in any U.S. publication.
I hope that every member of the U.S. Congress reads the article. The one
fact that continues to puzzle me about most profiles of Sudan is the use of
the term Arab to refer to the historic Nubian people of Northern Sudan. Mr.
Martin refers to them as Arab Sudanese. Having discussed this matter with
various experts, including members of the Sudanese National Corporation for
Antiquities and Museums, it needs to be made clear that the majority of
Sudanese people are of historic Nubian stock. The genetic studies support
this fact. If we were able to travel back to ancient Nubia 3,000 years ago
the makeup of Nubian society would look similar to what it is today in
modern Sudan.
To be Islamic, to embrace Arabic culture, or even to have a distance
relative from the Arab gulf region does not transform someone into an Arab.
Additionally, given the fact that Gulf Arabs were created out of an earlier
East African stock further convolutes this position. To call a modern
Sudanese an Arab is akin to calling an African American, a European.

You are absolutely right about the Nubian civilization. What is strange to
me, however, is the number of "Nubians" who will tell you that they are in
fact "Arabs", if not descendants of the Prophet himself - all outward
appearances to the contrary. I remember the same phenomenon in Egypt -
where I also lived for a couple of years in the late 70's. The Copts would
deny any Arab lineage - pointing to their pharonic heritage. They were
furthermore fond of pointing to Anwar Sadat's physical profile and its
similarity to pharonic depictions - arguing that Sadat, like most Egyptians,
are not really Arabs either. This is not my field of expertise. I have
taken my lead from how the people I have met identify themselves - however
mislead they may be!
