Check the link below...This is really a sight to behold! The image is a panoramic view of the world from the
new space station. It is a night photo with the lights clearly indicating the populated areas.
You can scroll East-West and North-South. Note that Canada's population is almost exclusively along the
U.S. border. Moving east to Europe, there is a high population concentration along the Mediterranean
Coast. It's easy to spot London, Paris, Stockholm and Vienna. Check out the development of Israel
compared to the rest of the Arab countries. Note the Nile River and the rest of the "Dark Continent".
After the Nile, the lights don't come on again until Johannesburg. Look at the Australian Outback and the
Trans-Siberian Rail Route. Moving east, the most striking observation is the difference between North
and South Korea. Note the density of Japan. What a piece of photography. It is an absolutely awesome
picture of the Earth taken from the Boeing built Space Station last November on a perfect night with no
obscuring atmospheric conditions.

Terrorism?

The American intelligence community's emphasis on high-tech gadgetry instead of time-tested methods of information-gathering may have left the United States more vulnerable to attack, according to some
experts on terrorism.
PNS analyst Paolo Pontoniere is a correspondent for Italy's leading magazine
and online Panorama.
Pride always comes before a fall.
The American intelligence community had been feeling pretty smug lately
about its ability to collect all sorts of information using the latest high-tech gizmos.
Now, in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on American soil,various intelligence agencies are reeling. Despite the usefulness of the Internet, Echelon, the National Security Agency, and the National Infrastructure Protection Center,when it comes to opposing traditional threats such as
terrorism, it's the old-fashioned means of gathering intelligence that bring home the bacon.
While the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), (FBI) and Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms (ATF) prepared to fight the next hacker attack, a straight-forward offense carried out by self-immolating terrorists at the World Trade Center
and the Pentagon caused great human and economic losses and caught everyone off guard.
"For some years now, the intelligence community has becoming increasingly
dependent on electronic means of surveillance and information-gathering to
carry out its duties," says Marvin Cetron, president of Forecasting International, an anti-terrorist research organization, and author of
"Terror 2000: The Future of Terrorism." Underscoring its interest in new
technologies, the CIA founded a venture capital group in 1999. Called
In-Q-It in honor of Major Boothroyd, alias Mr.Q, the character that
designed all the secret weapons used by James Bond, the organization
was headed by Bay Area entrepreneur Gillman Louie. The venture was designed so that the CIA could invest in what it considered the most promising technological developments, rather than chasing down new products after they had already been introduced to the public.
A study conducted in 1994 by Forecasting International
for various governmental agencies--including the State Department and the FBI-Terror 2000--warned American leaders about the likelihood of terrorist attacks being carried out in the United States. Anticipating what would sadly
happen years later, the study warned that the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the White House could have been attacked with hijacked airplanes by kamikaze terrorists seeking to score a bloody strike against the United States.
"In hindsight, we now discover that we were right. I had hoped that we wouldn't
be, and that intelligence strategists had heard our message and trained more men and women to operate in the field," adds Cetron. The U.S. government -- primarily the National Security Agency(NSA) and the National Infrastructure Center -- spends more than $30 billion annually to maintain its network of agents,
computers, satellites, and radar. The NSA has grown into a citylike complex, incorporating all of the latest
technology for espionage and cryptography.
"Once upon a time, the U.S. government spent a greatdeal of money to enroll and train the best graduates coming out of Ivy League schools. They would be sent on far-flung missions and would be equipped with the best means available to conceal their identity and the scope of their actions. Every agent was the product of an extremely rigorous training, and they were proud to fight on the frontlines of an undeclared war--that of intelligence," affirms Edward Luttwak, senior analyst at the European desk of Washington's Center for Strategic and International Studies.
"Today's agents are more like bureaucrats. While a huge
amount of money is spent on technology -- making them very
skilled in using all the latest tools of information-gathering --
much less attention is paid to equipping them with the
professional tools necessary to collect useful information
in the field or just from their colleague at the next desk,"
adds Luttwak.
Given an unanticipated blow reminiscent of the one the U.S. sustained at Pearl Harbor, people at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, are surely wondering why a comparable investment was not made in anticipating and preventing low-tech terrorism.

1. Introduction
Xenotransplantation is the transplanting of LIVE cells, tissues and organs from one species to another species.
Specifically, we are talking about the prospect of transplanting material from pigs into human beings. Although, in the meantime, a range of quite gruesome animal experiments have taken place where, for example, organs from pigs have been transplanted into rhesus monkeys and baboons 1 , some of whom have been captured from the wild.
2.)The reason why xenotransplantation is being developed is that companies such as Novartis are trying to exploit a gap in the market for organ transplants.
3.) There are growing waiting lists for organs and, currently, shortfalls in the supply. Although heart valves from pigs have been transplanted into human beings for the past twenty-five years, these valves are preserved in glutaraldehyde, thereby rendering them lifeless - they are not living tissue, and perform a relatively simple, mechanical function. Furthermore, it is believed that they do not harbour microorganisms such as viruses that could infect the recipient and then move into the general population.
4. ) Obviously, from an animal-rights perspective, whether the tissue is alive or not is beside the point as both kinds of tissue involve the exploitation of animals.However, modern xenotransplantation threatens to open up a brand new, never seen before area of animal abuse. This means that fighting xenotransplantation must become a priority for animal protection campaigners around the world. The fact that xenotransplantation is not yet established means there is a unique opportunity to tackle a form of animal abuse when it is perhaps at its most vulnerable, rather than reacting too late.
5.) The development of xenotransplantation The research team is which probably at the forefront of efforts to develop xenotransplantation is Imutran, who are based in Cambridge, England. Imutran was formed in the mid 1980s by David White -an immunologist, and the Papworth Hospital transplant surgeon John Wallwork. Imutran's macabre vision has been to develop genetically-corrupted pigs (through the addition of a human gene to the pig's genome) who would be kept in unnatural, barren conditions, and then slaughtered and dismembered. Their organs would then be transplanted into patients with organ failure.

In 1995, Imutran caused international shockwaves by claiming that they were ready to transplant pig hearts into humans within a year. Many commentators, including doctors, transplant surgeons and other scientists, condemned this announcement as not only grossly premature because of the lack of scientific basis for such a move, but also they noted the presence of powerful financial motivations for such a prediction. By exaggerating the prospects of xenotransplantation, the company hoped to make itself more attractive to potential investors or buyers.
7.) It seems to have worked. Imutran was bought by the Swiss pharmaceutical corporation Sandoz in 1996. Sandoz had a particular interest in transplantation generally because it was the manufacturer of the drug which completely dominates the market for immunosuppressant drugs: Cyclosporine.
8.)The following year, Sandoz merged with another Swiss drug company, Ciba Geigy, to form a powerful and very wealthy new drug corporation - Novartis. Today, Novartis is in competition with a couple of U.S.-based biotechnology firms for a share of what is predicted to be an $11 billion annual market for pig organs and associated drug treatments 8 - if it works, and if it is allowed to go ahead.
Imutran's prediction of pig hearts in humans by the end of 1996 did not materialise.
Now, in October 1999, no permission has yet been granted to transplant organs from pigs into humans anywhere in the world. (Although some sporadic experiments have taken place in the U.S. and elsewhere with pig cells and external pig livers)
