One day five years ago I found this page in a book which I retrieved From the public trash can on the corner of 87th St. & Lexington Avenue in New York City. It rested with the accumulation of the days offerings, mostly near new things freshly discarded, as is the case in this part of town. The Daly News, the Times, The NY Post papers ( discarded shields for the beleaguered urban commuters of buss or subway) some old magazines Time Life Newsweek etc. from a Shrinks, Dentists, Urologists or Oculists coffee table within an easy one hundred feet fore fifteen blocks in all directions and a few pop bottles with the obligatory flies bees and yellow jackets abuzzing a virtual cornucopia of superfluously, considering what I found. There just out side of a now four times defunct Ye Old stamp's & Coin Shop my prize of the day it rested on top like a bright red cherry on an ice cream sundae, I was attracted by the shinny new soft red leather cover it was or is more appropriately is a red pigskin with gold inlayed title's on the bound edge and fount cover. It never had a dust jacket it was bound for the coin collector the near expert though I suspect t that this "discovery of mine" was in fact my only proof that there is a god, at least there is a god of un answered questions but more about that later. I wondered out loud, going in to the coin shop to verify that This book was actually "Trash" A remaindered, then discarded unwanted book, an obsoleted volume. Not the panicked discard of some novice kleptomaniac,which because I now possess it I become the de-facto purloining accomplish.... ( Why this then? Why here, this public biaural? ) What a find I thought. It was from all appearance a moderately expensive book in it's day when it was published, the price was written in pencil on the inside flap $3.50 US, easily within the means of almost any one in the world of the 1950's. It's contents are priceless and it's subsequent reissues probably say the same thing and costs approximately the same give or take a few bucks.
