After the Nile, the lights don't come on again until Johannesburg. Look at the Australian Outback and the

Robert,
once again you are a better talker and writer... than listener or reader...
are you running for office some where?...

who said any thing about living in the past?...

my point is to build upon the foundations that have been laid for thousands
of years ...designs for the area in which we live...respecting our
elders...and there are people doing that in a contemporary setting...check
out

 by carol herselle krinsky
1996 oxford university press
ISBN 0-19-509739-4

for me there is a spiritual quality in indigenous architecture missing in
current american designs...designs built not for the soul but the pocket
book of the designers, builders, and most of all the building product
manufacturers...

i personally am not for giving up any thing... only modifying... both our
behavior and our products....if i could drop an energy saving power plant
into my 1987 gmc pickup i would do so right away( johnny don't give up on
your car just yet ) and send the old engine back to the steel plant...the
problem as i see it is our best minds(including yours Robert) are not about
improving existing technology...but making some new consumer product purely
for profit...why do we need a brand new tv, refrigerator, phone, computer
body and screen every few years?....they are not built for the long
haul...improvements should be able to be replaced within the system but
there's more money to be made by convincing the public to buy completely new
products.. including housing...

why are we not allowed to grow and use hemp fibers which have been proven to
last longer than what we currently use?...

and i am trying to find a way to get rid of my manufactured roofing
components...i thought i had written about that in a earlier thread...not
only did the indigenous people here do with out manufactured roofing
products(sent from hundereds or thousand miles away) so did indigenous
europeans as well as everybody else on the planet...many, if not most still
do...thatch, clay tiles, slate, wood shingles and shakes(i found out in
northern european earth roofs shingles were used under the sod)...each from
and for the benefit of the local economy...

and there is a place for some manufactured products...
i don't want to throw away the baby with the bath water ..but also i don't
want to kick grand pa out the back door either...

i don't believe i ever said take southwestern architecture out of the
southwest and import it to some where else!...that totally goes against what
i am talking about... we were discussing the use of thermal mass... the
adobe buildings in the south west was an example of thermal mass that has
worked for that area even in high elevation cold ...another was cob in
european buildings...
my contention has always been look to what has been done locally and improve
on that!...

thanks for the improved URL...
the problem i always ran into with geodesic domes was the roofing and
windows...i've been called into repair leaks on several of them both in
modoc co. ,santa clara and in santa cruz co.calif...the shingles system that
was used in the '60s to '80s was just not up to the task of working on a
dome structure...all of them i had come into contact had water damage
problems from a covering system that was not designed with domes in
mind...have things improved?...i can't remember why the windows leaked...may
have just been poor workmanship...i notice your model is a drawing and not a
physical house...have you built some homes...and have results other than
calculations on paper?...

the "American way" as you state it is a red herring to this debate...we, as
all people, will go the way of least resistance...show us some thing that is
better, cleaner, healthier, cheaper and promote it... and we will buy
it...look at all the crap we buy now...it's promotion...our job, as i see
it..those of us who take the time to debate and research this issue IS to
find that better, cleaner, healthier, cheaper way...

i am so sorry that you feel so bad about alternative architecture as to
blast away at people who are trying something different than your own chosen
way...we are not all and do not all follow "false prophets"...

for your personal information Robert i actually have "been there and done
that" as a youngster with a christian religious prophet in the '60s and
recognize that evil quite well...

my mother(the earth) is not a black hole...i respect Her to the best of my
ability and  wish every one do the same...

perhaps you could build  and research a PAHS system before you blast things
you seem to have little personal experience with...with the PAHS system the
theory is you bank on solar when the sun is shining(the summer time)...
and i have never heard of any one espousing a system with out a back up
heating source for those "great white northern short cloudy days"...

with tires.. for those of us who have actually used them they work very
well...
if you take time to read my "dirt bag" thread you will see i am trying to
find a simpler solution than tires for MY personal use that may be of
benefit to others... and not throw earth ship or any other technology out
all together...tire walls have been in use as retaining walls in areas with
very unstable soil long before micheal reynolds built his first earth
ship...

i am and have been a builder for 30 years and have used "modern materials"
for the whole time...modern is not the issue... blasting me for wanting to
find a better way is quite confusing...why are you on this list?(of which i
suspect 90% are earth shippers)...
as to your direct question i am not using composit beams(gluelams) or old
growth timbers...
i am using reject wood left behind to be be burned that the lumber
manufactures don't want...none of which happen to be over 50 years old...
most of the wood i'm using is 25 years old or younger...

thank you  for the consern on my 'mental well being''...
my indigenous family live in HUD houses on the walker river reservation and
don't care much one way or the other for your political correctness... that
is a white issue and if our "gods" rained on my parade i would thank
them...only we don't have "gods"...and tend to use what ever material is
available for the job like any one else...as for politics i'm a registered
republican...and an elected alternate delegate to our convention...

we should watch what we read into things...they are not always what they
appear to be...

chris
3crow

p.s. i loved that bit about computers...if this were a physical debate you
would probably tear me up like a lion...i'm a very slow crow...

Ordinary Physics Can't
Be Used To Study Cosmic
 Rays  [Contact: Phillip Gentry]
Coupling two well-known but previously uncombined scientific concepts might render moot certain prevailing assumptions used in studying the physics of fast-moving particles and the universe in which they move.
Physicists have long understood but never considered the interplay between the finite accuracy of clocks and how traveling at speeds approaching the speed of light distorts time, according to Dr. Richard Lieu, an associate physics professor at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).
His "timely" analysis is the topic of a research paper scheduled for publication in the April 1 print edition of Astrophysical Journal Letters.
"Time is a basic parameter of all of our experiments," said Lieu. "The energy of a moving particle, its frequency, is measured in cycles per second. And Planck time controls the accuracy of our clocks. Our clocks can't be more accurate than Planck time."
In physics, the smallest measurable interval of time is Planck time, five times ten to the minus forty fourth seconds. (Forty four zeros on the right hand side of the decimal point, then a five.) This represents the limit of how accurate our clocks can be.
But perceived time depends on an object's speed relative to the clock doing the measurements. For someone riding along with the cosmic ray, time would seem to move normally, while clocks in a stationary laboratory would appear to move much slower. From the cosmic ray's frame of reference, the laboratory clock's Planck time -- the limit of its accuracy -- would get longer. From the cosmic ray's frame of reference, the laboratory clock becomes less accurate.
"This means that when it comes to using our laboratory clock to measure the 'time' of a fast moving particle, the inaccuracies involved will be much larger than the Planck time itself," said Lieu.
An observer standing in a laboratory or floating in a spacecraft might detect an object moving at incredible speed, then try to decipher how much energy that particle carried. The problem, says Lieu, is that an observer in a lab can't accurately gauge how fast or slow time is flowing on that fast-moving object, and this will affect the way we can measure the properties of the object, including its energy.
"The faster the relative motion (the greater the difference between the speeds of two objects), the more inaccurately you are able to determine the conditions of the particle," he said.
Some of the problems astrophysicists might face due to this inaccuracy are seen in the mystery of the most powerful cosmic rays ever detected. Cosmic rays are presumed to be the nuclei of atoms, stripped of their electrons and accelerated to speeds near the speed of light.
"The speed of these cosmic rays is very close to the speed of light," said Lieu. "They are the fastest particles yet detected. Each has more than the energy of a bullet, 10^20 electron volts."
While there is evidence that these most powerful cosmic rays must be coming from outside of our galaxy, if they come from elsewhere in the universe they really shouldn't reach us at all.
The problem is that at the speeds these particles are traveling, they should be bumping into the cosmic background radiation. Thought to be remnants of the Big Bang that created the universe, the cosmic background radiation is made up of microwave photons that have less energy than visible light.
These cosmic rays are thought to move so fast that when we picture ourselves riding along with such a particle we see it colliding not with an oncoming microwave photon, but with a gamma ray (the opposite end of the electromagnetic spectrum, with more energy than X-rays).
Remember E=mc2? With the energy of a gamma ray involved, each collision would cause a nuclear reaction, releasing so much "E" that it materializes into sub-atomic particles called pions; so much energy that the collisions should cause, according to us on Earth, the cosmic ray to lose both energy and speed.
After a few of these collisions, the highest energy cosmic rays should be slowed down far too much before they reach the outskirts of the Milky Way to reach Earth carrying 1020 electron volts of energy.
"But the fact that we detect them means that they survive the journey," said Lieu.
How?
The laboratory experiments that showed pions being produced from high energy collisions used stationary ions and gamma rays, said Lieu. "We assumed that all uniformly moving platforms must experience the same physics."
If that were true and the calculations of the energy carried by the highest energy cosmic rays are accurate, then the collision of the cosmic ray with a microwave photon should have the same result as the collision of a gamma ray and a stationary ion. And if that's the case, those highest energy cosmic rays shouldn't survive their intergalactic voyage.
"This is where the loophole comes in," said Lieu. "No one has ever observed under lab conditions how a 1020 ev nucleus interacts with a photon. We try to picture what's happening as if we were moving together with the particle. We can then infer a collision that's familiar to us.
"But, when a time uncertainty as small as the Planck time according to us is in fact a lot larger from the perspective of the cosmic ray, this grossly increases the uncertainty of our estimates concerning what happens to the cosmic ray. Our 'error bar' gets much bigger.
"Because space-time fluctuations prevent us from identifying the correct frame of reference with respect to which the nucleus is at rest, we don’t know what energy the microwave photons assume in that 'correct' frame of reference.”
If those highest energy cosmic rays aren't really doing what we think they are doing, their collisions with microwave photons won't release enough energy to create pions. Instead, photons from the cosmic background radiation would bounce off of the cosmic ray nuclei like ping pong balls bouncing off a battleship -- and the nuclei keep coasting along.
"At least half of those nuclei should be able to cross the universe," said Lieu.
Since the highest energy cosmic rays do reach Earth and the energy they carry appears to be 1020 ev, in cases such as this, says Lieu, "it appears that we can no longer use ordinary, everyday physics that you can verify in your lab to understand them." - By Phillip Gentry

today says Taliban and al-Qaeda prisoners are  being imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay military base in Cuba "in temporary
'outdoor cells' until a permanent detention facility is built." http://abcnews.go.com/sections/world/DailyNews/STRIKE_MAIN.html
Why Guantanamo?  This reminded me of an item from a week and a half ago (below) which wondered if this would be a set-up
for an invasion of Cuba. A friend also said she wondered if people were being taken to Guantanamo because it would be hard
for American civilians to verify  who they were (maybe not who the government said they were) or what  was going on with them
there.  Why Guantanamo?  It's worth watching It also reminded me of another article I'd read, links given below.

Maybe I'm just too suspicious, but I want to share this  scenario
as a nasty hypothesis.
1.  The United States imprisons captured Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters at Guantanamo, which is
surrounded on the land side with hilly country. This is already in the works.
2.  The United States reports that a group of these prisoners have escaped into the hills.
This could be arranged or it could  be fabricated.
3.  Cuba is required to turn over these escaped prisoners. This could be difficult if they had actually

4.  The United States accuses Cuba of "harboring terrorists" and bomb the daylights out of the country.

PREFACE
Before the Gatewood Galbraith for Governor Campaign in 1991, few Kentuckians
knew hat the plant that the federal government had demonized for over 50 years as
"Marijuana -Assassin of Youth," was, in fact, Cannabis Hemp, the most traded
commodity in the world until the mid-1800s, and our state's number one crop,
industry, and most important source ofrevenue, for over 150 years.

Today, thanks to the efforts of pioneer hemp researchers and public advocates such
as Galbraith, Jack Fraizer, Jack Herer, Chris Conrad, Ed Rosenthal, Don Wirtshafter
and others, the federal government's unjustifiable suppression of our state's right to
develop our most valuable and versatile natural resource, is facing increasing
opposition from an informed public. Hemp is now recognized as the number one
agriculturally renewablel raw material in the world, and perhaps the only crop / industry
which can guarantee us industrial and economic independence from the
 trans-national corporations.

"Shadow of the Swastika" is a follow-up to my earlier work, "Cannabis Hemp:
the Invisible Prohibition Revealed," which I wrote and published in support of the
Galbraith Campaign. Since publication of that booklet, there has been growing
public acceptance of the evidence that Marijuana Prohibition was created in 1937,
not to protect society from the "evils of the drug Marijuana," as the  Federal
government claimed, but as an act of deliberate economic and industrial sabotage
against the re-emerging Industrial  Hemp Industry.

Previous investigations  by hemp researchers have been limited to
the suppression of free-market competition from the hemp industry,
and focused on the activities of  three prominent members of America's
corporate, industrial and banking establishment during the mid- to late-
1930s:

WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST, the newspaper and magazine tycoon.
The expected rebirth of cannabis hemp as a less expensive source of pulp
for paper meant his millions of acres of prime timberland, and investment in
wood pulp papermaking equipment, would soon be worth much less.

In the 1920s, about the same time as the equipment was developed to
economically mass-produce raw hemp into pulp and fiber for paper, he
began the "Reefer Madness" hoax in his newspaperand magazine
 publications.

As Secretary of the Treasury he created the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, and
appointed his own future nephew-in-law, Harry Anslinger, as director. Anslinger
would later use the sensational, and totally fabricated, articles published by Hearst,
to push the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 through Congress, which successfully
destroyed the rebirth of the cannabis hemp industry.

A prominent member of one Congressional subcommittee who voted in favor of this
bill was Joseph Guffey of Pennsylvania, an oil tycoon and former business partner of
Andrew Mellon in the Spindletop oil fields in Texas.

THE DU PONT CHEMICAL CORPORATION,
which owned the patents on synthetic petrochemicals and industrial processes that
promised billions of dollars in future profits from the sale of wood pulp paper, lead
additives for gasoline, synthetic fibers and plastics, if hemp could be suppressed.
At the time, du Pont family influence in both government and the private sector was
unmatched, according to historians and journalists.

This publication, however, reveals documented historical evidence that the
suppression of the hemp industry was only one key part of a much larger
conspiracy in the 1930s, not only by the three corporate interests named
above, but by many others, as well.

Congressional records, FBI reports and investigations by the Justice
Department, during the1930s and 1940s, have already documented
evidence of this wider plot. A list of the corporations named include
Du Pont, Standard Oil, and General Motors, all of which were proven to be
conspiring with Nazi industrial cartels to eliminate competition world-wide
and divide among themselves the Earth's industrial resources and
commercial markets, for profitable exploitation.

This conspiracy succeeded. It is now obvious that this lack of serious
competition in the industrial raw materials market caused our present -
and totally contrived - addiction to petrochemicals. Its success is directly
 responsible for the most troubling problems we now face in the 1990s;
serious damage to our environment, concentration of economic and
political power into fewer and fewer hands, and the weakening of the
rights of individuals and states to determine their own futures.

It is more and more evident that, given the historical record, the
structure of the New World Order is being built upon the Foundation
of Marijuana Prohibition, and only the relegalization of free-market
 hemp competition can save us.
