When he looked in the mirror, Adolph Hitler never said to himself: "There stands the murderer of six million Jews." Instead, he saw himself as a prophet of rejuvenation for Reich und Volk. Hitler's is one of several political ideologies which John Mohawk, in Utopian Legacies, examines as motors of oppression. "Nazism was a revitalization movement, complete with it's own vision of utopia, its rationalizations for conquest and plunder, and an ability to disarm ordinary people's sense of morality and to plunge an entire nation...into an orgy of violence and murder,"
Aspirations of utopia inevitably creates myths by which a "chosen people" attempt to elevate themselves above the rest of humanity. Witness Hitler's eugenic Aryan "superman," or Stalin's New Socialist Man. In turn, a "chosen people" justify
seizure of victims' land and resources as required by the conqueror's plunder-enabling utopian vision. When one utopian vision collides with another, the results sometimes have bathed Eurasian history in blood.
Mohawk describes the brutality of the Christian crusades. In these wars, as in many others, brutality was excused by perpetrators who characterize their enemies as subhuman.

2001 Bush's Orwellian Address Happy New Year: It's 1984

Seventeen years later than expected, 1984 has arrived. In his
address to Congress Thursday, George Bush effectively declared
permanent war -- war without temporal or geographic limits; war
without clear goals; war against a vaguely defined and constantly
shifting enemy. Today it's Al-Qaida; tomorrow it may be Afghanistan;
next year, it could be Iraq or Cuba or Chechnya.
No one who was forced to read 1984 in high school could fail to
hear a faint bell tinkling. In George Orwell's dreary classic, the
totalitarian state of Oceania is perpetually at war with either
Eurasia or Eastasia.
Although the enemy changes periodically, the war is permanent;
its true purpose is to control dissent and sustain dictatorship by
nurturing popular fear and hatred.
The permanent war undergirds every aspect of Big Brother's
authoritarian program, excusing censorship, propaganda,
secret police, and privation. In other words, it's terribly convenient.
And conveniently terrible. Bush's alarming speech pointed to a
shadowy enemy that lurks in more 60 countries, including the US.
He announced a policy of using maximum force against any
individuals or nations he designates as our enemies, without
color of international law, due process, or democratic debate.
He explicitly warned that much of the war will be conducted in
secret. He rejected negotiation as a tool of diplomacy.
He announced starkly that any country that doesn't knuckle under
to US demands will be regarded as an enemy. He heralded the
creation of a powerful new cabinet-level police agency called the
"Office of Homeland Security." Orwell couldn't have named
it better.
By turns folksy ("Ya know what?") and chillingly bellicose
("Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists"),
Bush stepped comfortably into the role of Big Brother, who
needs to be loved as well as feared.
Meanwhile, his administration acted swiftly to realize the
governing principles of Oceania:
WAR IS PEACE. A reckless war that will likely bring about a
deadly cycle of retaliation is being sold to us as the means to
guarantee our safety. Meanwhile, we've been instructed to
accept the permanent war as a fact of daily life. As the inevitable
slaughter of innocents unfolds overseas, we are to "live our lives
and hug our children."
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. "Freedom itself is under attack,
" Bush said, and he's right. Americans are about to lose many
of their most cherished liberties in a frenzy of paranoid legislation.
The government proposes to tap our phones, read our email and
seize our credit card records without court order. It seeks authority
to detain and deport immigrants without cause or
trial. It proposes to use foreign agents to spy on American citizens.
To save freedom, the warmongers intend to destroy it.
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. America's "new war" against terrorism
will be fought with unprecedented secrecy, including heavy press
restrictions not seen for years, the Pentagon has advised.
Meanwhile, the sorry history of American imperialism --
Collaboration with terrorists, bloody proxy wars against civilians,
forcible replacement of democratic governments with corrupt
dictatorships -- is strictly off-limits to mainstream media.
Lest it weaken our resolve, we are not to be allowed to understand
the reasons underlying the horrifying crimes of September 11.
The defining speech of Bush's presidency points toward an
Orwellian future of endless war, expedient lies, and ubiquitous
social control.
But unlike 1984's doomed protagonist, we've still
got plenty of space to maneuver and plenty of ways to resist.
It's time to speak and to act. It falls on us now to take to the
streets, bearing a clear message for the warmongers: We don't
love Big Brother.

Three centuries ago a movement began in Europe which
was to alter the entire flow of history. Men of the slave-
holding class began to ethically question the very institution
of slavery, an institution older than recorded history.
Against all privilege, against their economic interests, at
great risk and personal hardship, these men and women
began a fight against that ancient evil.
Decades passed, blood flowed between brothers over the
question of right and wrong off the coast of Africa, in the
tidewater of Virginia. In place after place the institution fell
until a bit over a century ago, the ancient evil had fallen
everywhere and none were to be found who even
advocated it.
We now think of slavery as something of the past, or as an
evil found only in isolated parts of the Third World. As we
read our history, we pride ourselves in knowing that what the
abolitionists fought for was indisputably right and their
personal sacrifices a noble necessity. We tell ourselves that
we would have acted just the same conviction for the
cause of freedom.
But, slavery is not dead.
It lives today in our cities and towns. It lives within a few
miles of most who will read this page. It lives quietly, too
quietly, while newspaper headlines should be screaming
with outrage. It lives largely undisturbed, while you and I ought
to be demanding action, and while law enforcement should
put aside lesser causes to combat this evil.
What was evil in 1861 is evil today.

Conspicuous by its silence the CIA owned and influenced media
did virtually no coverage of what may be one of the decades
biggest stories. Only UPI issued any statement on the CIA's
admission that following WW II Hitler's top general in charge of
espionage transferred his entire network of thousands of spies
and double agents to what became the newly-formed CIA.
What makes this much more than an interesting footnote to
history is that the entire domestic and foreign history of the CIA
has been molded by these former Nazis whose ideas on Eugenics,
race, social control, biowarfare and propaganda dominate the
policies of countless "think tanks" like the Rockefeller-funded
Manhattan Institute and have influenced the U.S. government at
its highest levels.
During the past five decades numerous isolated revelations about
Nazis imported to America by the Dulles brothers, William
Casey and others have broken through the media blackout. These
stories usually revolve around former concentration camp guards
who hid their identity when emigrating. What makes this
different is that General Ghelen was the #1 Nazi in this program.
By acknowledging a CIA connection to Ghelen the entire can of
worms can now be pried open.
